Let's look  at other usages of prefer

d)    If you usepreferand rather than in the same sentence, you should use an infinitive before rather than and a bare infinitive,ie the base form of the verb after it

              e.g.          I prefer to stay home rather than go out       not  to go out

c)      If you use just than instead of rather than after prefer, you should use an infinitive both before and after than

e.g.        I prefer to eat home than to eat out

Prefer is  one of the  verbs that we frequently use in every day conversation;however, with different sentences you should use different forms

a) afterpreferyou can use either infinitive or gerund without any difference in meaning

e.g.    I prefer to continue my education in Iran

        or       I prefer continuing my education in Iran

b) if there is an object after prefer, you cannot use gerund. In that case you must use an infinitive

e.g.      I prefer youto instalthe computer.   Not installing

c) when you prefer something to something, you should use gerund in both cases

e.g.    I prefer cycling to swimming

After "make" a bare infinitive

Be careful! This is not always the case!    When make is used in passive form, an infinitive should be followed by it 

                         The students were made to attend the class

The children were made to clean up their room
